St Mary’s NS have entered the Cumann na mBunscol football
competitions for over 20 years. Our first success in Division 1 came
in 2007 while the same bunch of players won the county mini-sevens
in the same year. County U-21 star Mark Magee was selected from
this team to play in Croke Park prior to the Kerry-Tyrone senior
final in 2008. Further titles came in 2012 and 2014. In 2015 Mullagh
NS narrowly defeated us in the semi-final after extra time.
Ramor United send coaches to our school every Friday to fine tune
our skills. Our principal Mr Peadar Quealy trains the boys teams in
our school pitch and in Dolan Park on the Ramor pitch.
Past pupils Conor Bradley, Micheál Smart, Jack Doyle and Liam Brady
have represented Cavan U-21’s while Damian Barkey has represented
Cavan Seniors numerous times and won an All-Ireland Junior title in 2014.
Every year St Mary’s N.S participates in the Cumann na mBunscol girls footballleague. We are currently placed in Division 1 along with many other large schoolsin county Cavan. The league generally takes place in term 3 with the majority ofgames being played outside of school hours. All games are two touch, 13 asideand 20 minutes each half. The team usually plays 4-5 league games and isgenerally made up of 5th and 6th class girls. Details regarding games are given tothe girls on a match by match basis. Training takes place after school from 3-4pm weekly and all girls are welcome to attend. The team is currently beingcoached by Ms. Louise Maguire and Mrs Caroline Gaynor.
St. Mary’s has enjoyed much success in the Cumann na mBunscol Girls footballleague with our most recent victories in 2009, 2010 and 2014. Over the years, anumber of girls have also represented St. Mary’s N.S in Croke Park as part ofthe Mini Sevens series. We wish the girls the very best of luck in this yearsgames. We know you will do St. Mary’s proud.
Our senior girls play indoor camogie in February and March every year. The Cumann na mBunscol league takes place in September and October and the girlstake part in a camogie blitz in May and June. They have enjoyed much successunder the expert eyes of teachers Ms Áine O’Reilly, Ms Melissa Gilcreest and Ms Grace Kelly.
Handball commenced in school in April 2013 when our caretaker Joe
constructed a one-wall in our school hall. Five time world handball
singles champion Mr Paul Brady was teaching in our school at the
Cavan Cumann na mBunscol competitions were entered in 2014 where
we won two county titles. Three titles were won in 2015 and Seán
McEvoy reached the Ulster singles final.
In 2016 we again won three county titles. Our U-11 girls team of
Sophie Keogh and Chloe Kerrigan won the Ulster title and finished
second in the All-Ireland series while our U-11 boys narrowly lost
the Ulster semi-finals.
We are in the process of building two outdoor walls in our
playground. Matthew Smith and Oliver McCrystal represented Cavan
at U-12 level in 2016 and reached the Ulster semi-final. They won an
U-9 doubles tournament in Loughmacrory in Co. Tyrone in 2014.
Every year St. Mary’s brings pupils to the one wall national
competition in Co. Mayo.
In 2016 we entered the community games U-13 boys and girls
St Mary’s have entered the FAI schools 5-a-side soccer
competitions for the past 10 years. In 2006 our boys were crowned
All-Ireland champions after winning two and drawing our last game in
the finals. We were crowned Ulster champions again in 2012.
Our girls have also won two Ulster competitions in 2010 and 2011.
Our county competition is held every year in Cootehill soccer
grounds in March and April. Master Quealy trains the boys soccer
team while Mrs Leddy and Mrs Brennan train the girls team.
There is a proud history of girls soccer in St Mary’s NS. The girls of fifth and sixth class are trained by Ms Claire Leddy and Mrs Karen Brennan. The soccer is centred around the SPAR FAI Primary School 5-a-side competition.
The competition is organised on a county, regional and provinsional basis, before the best schools take part in overall FAI 5-a-side finals.
The girls of St Mary’s NS have experienced great success on a county and regional level in the past. In 2010 and 2011, the girls brought home Ulster titles. We look forward to continued success in the years ahead.
St Mary’s NS has entered teams in the County Cavan cross-country
running competitions for the last 10 years. There are junior,
intermediate and senior races for boys and girls.
We have had many top ten results since 2006. Marius Zakurinovas
won first place in the senior boys’ competition in 2014.
Racing takes place in October every year on Killinkere football
grounds. Training for cross country starts in September. Mr Peadar
Quealy, Ms Rosena Jordan and Mrs Caroline Gaynor train the cross
country teams on our school grounds.
