Our Active School Flag Story

St Mary’s NS achieved our first Active School Flag in 2018. Achieving this flag marked the commitment of our school to promoting activity and movement, in all its forms, for 60 minutes every day.

Three years later, we are now striving to renew this Active Flag. Embedded in our practice, is the Daily Mile walk/run, the Active Week and indoor movement breaks in the classroom.

Building on these, this year we introduced European Sport’s Day on the 25th of September 2020. We are continuing to prioritise games in P.E lessons that can be transferred and played as yard games at breaktimes.

Fundamental movement skills and physical literacy are areas that our teaching and learning are focused on. We are aiming to make more children aware of the amount of time they are moving and the quality of their movements.

Partnerships are valued and we are working with our student council who represent the student voice. We are using our school website and questionnaires to gain feedback from students and parents. Cavan Sports Partnership were central in facilitating the painting of our yards with trails this year.

Active School Week takes place on Monday, May 24th this year. We are excitedly putting the schedule together for this. Details to follow!

Hopefully, our Active Flag renewal application will be successful. We want to thank our fantastic students and super staff for their enthusiasm and dedication to staying active.
